Hi guys! Welcome to Episode 588 of the wildly successful lifestyle podcast! Good to be with you. I feel so grateful to be able to hang out with you twice a week for a little bit. It means a lot that you’re here and that you keep showing up, so thank you!
We were at our friends house for a pool party this summer and we were having a conversation about reading and podcasts, when one of our friends is so important because knowledge is power. Another friend immediately spoke up and said “no no no, knowledge is not power, knowledge is POTENTIAL power. He was so right. I’ve heard that before but it never hurts to hear it again because we can hear all the things, know all the things we need to do for our own health, our own wellness but if we don’t act on it, it gets filed away in our brain as a little bit of a weight in a way because we know we should be doing something, but we aren’t doing it for whatever reason. It doesn’t us no good filed away in fact it adds a little bit of stress to our life because now we know we would benefit from doing something that we know we aren’t currently doing.
I know this very well because I am a learner. I absorb books and podcasts like they are breath to me. I also know there are things I can be doing better and there always will be, that will never change because we are living organisms. But if we are going to grow we can’t just know things, we have to act on them.
I’m reading a book, I’m almost finished with it, it’s the 5 levels of wealth. One of the levels of wealth is social wealth. In this book Sahil Bloom talks about how important our social wealth is to the happiness of our life. He talks about how people that live far away from their families and maybe see them once or twice a year, how little time they have left with them based on living to be 75 years old. And how the people we love the most, we should be making every effort to be with them as much as we can. I know this to be true and have been focused on doing this with my parents but in the book he said to sort of list out these people and when I did I realized that there are some that are falling through the cracks. One is my brother.
He lives in the same city, but 30 minutes away and we see him every Christmas, but some years that may be it. As I read the chapter and I made my list, I realized that my brothers birthday was that weekend on a Saturday. And I thought I should reach out to him to see if they already have plans on his birthday, Now he has lots of friends and when I mentioned it to Eric, we both agreed he probably already has plans. It almost deterred me from reaching out, but the next night as I continued the chapter on social wealth, I put the book down and immediately sent my sister in law a text asking if they already had plans or if we could arrange to have dinner somewhere to celebrate his birthday. She text me back the next day and said they have been so busy that they didn’t have anything planned but that would be amazing and she would book reservations today for Saturday night. We ended up having an amazing dinner, my niece came into town from college and it was just a lovely night. At the end of the dinner my brother even said “it means so much to me that you reached out and wanted to have dinner on my birthday”. Thank you so much. Of course my heart felt so full. And it was all because I applied the knowledge I gained from a book I was reading. Now it’s getting out of control because my brother in law asked if Eric and I could make a surprise appearance for my baby sister’s birthday in Nashville which is a 3 hour drive in the middle of the week, but I guess I’m becoming an overachiever in social wealth and Eric too because we said Yes, we can definitely do that, and so we did. Our social wealth cup is overflowing all because I took the knowledge I had and applied it in real time.
So my question of the day is what knowledge have you been taking in lately that may be getting filed away without application? Is there something that’s been weighing on you that you know you should be doing that you just haven’t taken action on it?
Maybe it’s that new nutrition or exercise plan your friend told you about or that new supplement that you heard about on that health podcast, whatever it is, it’s meant for you to be doing it.
My challenge to you today is to take one piece of knowledge you’ve been knowing will make you better and put it into action in some way. It may seem hard to take that first step but it’s also hard with the thought of not doing it weighing on you. Choose your hard. One keeps you stuck and the other moves you forward, and you know which one leads to a wildly successful life! Share this with three people who may need a nudge to move forward. I love you guys! I’ll talk to you in a few days.
