This episode has a topic dear to my heart. What makes you feel BEAUTIFUL? Not the kind of beauty you seen a mirror or chase through someone else’s approval, but the kind that radiates from the way you live and how you keep showing up day after day.
Pamela Anderson said something this week that stopped me in my tracks, she said “If you’re looking for beauty, don’t look in the mirror, or in the approval of others; Look in the way you live, the way you love, and the way you keep on going. Those words remind us that beauty isn’t just skin deep, it’s in our souls to want to live in a way that feels beautiful to us. It’s in the choices we make, the moments we create, and the courage we have inside of us to live authentically. To live true to who we are.
People love to point to pictures of the beach in the 70’s and say “look how beautiful people were back then”. And it’s true. There was something so vibrant, so natural about those days. People seemed more at ease in their own skin, more connected to the world and the people around them. But here’s the thing, we are still those same people, our essence hasn’t changed. It’s just our habits, our distractions, our pace, they’ve shifted. I believe with every fiber in my being that we all were beautifully made. That spark of beauty is still inside us, waiting to be uncovered. And like Pamela Anderson said you don’t have to look in the mirror for beauty, you can create it all around you.
Lately I’ve been on a little journey of my own, rediscovering beauty in a new way. A few months ago, I started listening to classical music. I’m no expert, honestly I’m so new to it, I’m learning how a symphony can soar or a piano can whisper. It’s like opening a whole new world. I’m noticing how certain ones inspire me, or energize me and others make me think. There’s something so beautiful about it. I love how it makes me feel, kind of like walking into a beautifully well design space where everything is intentional and every element is just right.
I was talking to my big sister about it and she said “I get it, it makes you feel Proper”. I laughed and said “yeah, that’s exactly it! But it’s more than that, it makes me want to move through my day with a little more grace. I find myself choosing outfits that feel elegant, sipping my coffee a little slower, noticing how graceful the trees look when the wind blows. It is adding a whole new layer to my day that I love. I’m realizing that the things we let into our minds, music, stories, ideas, they shape how we see ourselves and the world. They’re like the clothes we choose to wear, they matter in how we feel throughout the day. So ask yourself Do I like how that music makes me feel? Do I like the ideas that tv show or movie puts in my head? Being picky about what you let in, because beauty starts here right in our own mind. But it’s not only about what’s in your head, it has a lot to do with what’s around you as well.
Creating a beautiful life isn’t just about what you see in the mirror or the thoughts you think, although that has a lot to do with it. It’s also about what’s around you. The way you surround yourself with people and things you love. It’s about being ok with letting things flow out of your life that aren’t meant to stay and embracing the things that are. There’s no law that says you must keep that piece of furniture that your mom gave you if you hate it. I have clients tell me all the time, I hate that piece but I feel bad giving it away because it was my moms. You don’t have to keep it, Trust me there is someone who will love that piece and give it new life. If you don’t cherish it, give it to someone who will.
On the other hand, Some of my favorite pieces in my home were given to me by my grandparents. My grandfather made a beautiful bench from a horse and buggy seat that they found in an antique store when they were younger and I have a ceramic rhinosorous that he found and glazed, when he got it it had a missing horn on it’s head and he made a new one and I cherish it. I’m finding that only things I really love are the things I want to surround myself with.
Creating a beautiful life is also about taking time for the people you cherish. I can remember when I was younger spending time with people who after I got to know them just didn’t really jive with who I was, but sometimes out of habit or a sense of guilt, we keep spending time with them even though it doesn’t feel good. You don’t have to do that either. Your time is valuable, spend it with the people you love and who bring you joy.
Your home, your office, your car, these all are areas where you can create a more beautiful life. I am married to a very neat, very organized husband and he has rubbed off on me. I haven’t always been so neat! But I realize the difference in the way I feel when everything is in it’s place. It makes coming home so much more enjoyable. Keeping fresh flowers even if you pick them from your yard like I do sometimes makes your home feel elegant and alive. Getting in my clean car, I feel proud to drive it, it’s not new but it’s clean!
Let’s face it, we all love to feel beautiful. We love to love our home, we love to drive a clean car, we love to be surrounded with people and things that bring us joy. We were made to love beautiful things. It’s very natural to want it, But it takes intentionality to have it.
Where could you create more beauty in your life?
That’s my challenge to you this week. Pick one area where you could create a more beautiful life for yourself. Does that mean picking your mom up for lunch? Or maybe getting your car detailed? Maybe it’s taking your clothes to the dry cleaner so they are beautifully pressed. Choose one thing that would make you feel more beautiful this week and do that thing. You deserve it and you are craving it. You never regret making positive choices for your own life. Share this with 3 people who are bright spots in your world. I love you guys, I’ll talk to you in a few days!
