Now, you may sometimes feel a little stuck even though you have good habits, If you’re like me, sometimes you get into the habit of your routines and they become such a part of your life that you don’t even consider changing because it’s comfortable. It’s better than most, or its good enough…have you ever thought that? Well I hope my experience this week nudges you to maybe rethink that…….
This last week Eric had a little gift sitting downstairs with a sweet note. Sometimes he gets home late and Im already asleep and often he leaves me little notes. The little gift he left me was a journal. I love when he leaves me those little notes and little gifts, it makes me feel special but I have to admit I had a little bit of a negative thought about the journal. You see I meditate and journal every day. Almost every day, sometimes I hit the ground running but that is my go to routine every morning. I have my beautiful little journal that’s just blank so I free flow thoughts of gratitude and how I want to show up for the day. I love my routine and have been doing it exactly the same for years. So, when I skimmed the journal he bought me I thought I don’t like this kind of journal where it prompts you of what to think about and has lines of ways to think. I found myself thinking “I don’t like this journal” but then I realized how closed minded I was being and how I just like my comfortable little morning routine and my blank journal where I can write what I am grateful for and be on my way, no-one telling me what to think about or write about. Just me. So I thought ok be open and grateful and just see if you like it.
When I say the change it made in just the first two days of how I feel and how I am looking at thing was exponential, that doesn’t even cover it. My really good really beneficial routine had become repetitive without me realizing it. Yes, it’s better than if I wasn’t journaling at all but is that what Im going for? No. I want to continually grow and be the best version of me possible. That means the things I do daily even if they are good also have to grow and evolve. We think that just because we have good routines that that’s good enough, we think well we are better than most people. But is good enough the goal? Does good enough sound Wildly Successful? Not to me it doesn’t. But I am a lot of times guilty of falling into these good habits and then just staying right there.
I exercise 5-6 times a week. And that usually includes yoga at least once but twice is ideal. I have been doing that for a while. Leena, my friend for the last year has been telling me I need to go to a local gym about 15 minutes away, called Hot Yoga Plus with her because the classes are another level and they get them super hot and I should just try it once, well for about a year probably I said my classes at the gym are just fine, I don’t need to go somewhere else to do a class, I mean yoga is yoga right? UHHHH no. I finally gave in and took a class with her because I had heard a couple other people saying how great the classes were…which usually means something is telling me to give it a try so I did. And wow, I was pretty much blown away at the level of the teachers and students doing yoga at this studio. It literally blew my mind. This is stuff I see on tv but no it’s right here in my back yard! My yoga practice had been good enough for long enough, I realized I was sort of going through the motions of yoga at my gym because there wasn’t a whole lot of variation and they have to keep it at a certain level so everyone can do it, so I wasn’t really getting better but in this new yoga studio, new to me anyway, everyone around you is so good, it inspires you to do better too. It’s taking my yoga practice to another level and I would have never known I needed that unless I was open to mixing up my routine a bit.
We all like our routines. We are built by our routines, we are built by our daily habits. But being open to try new things or new ways of doing your already good routines can keep you from feeling stuck. Being open to pivot when an opportunity arises is the difference between being good enough and growing into the best that you can possibly be.
Even those good routines can get too routine, too redundant. It’s better than if you didn’t have the routine of course but has it become so ritual that you’re not gonna grow beyond where you currently are?
My challenge to you today is if this hits home even a little for you, or if someone has been suggesting you try this new thing but you’ve put it off because what you have is good enough, this is your sign it’s time to give it a go, it’s time to switch it up. My entire mindset changed within the first two days of my new journal and my body has changed already from my first month of doing the new yoga classes, those were changes I wanted but didn’t realize I had become so comfortable in my routines that I was never going to get there from doing what I had done for the last several years. Growth comes from discomfort, so if you’re frustrated with where you are but you have good habits, you probably need to kick it up a gear. Share this with 3 people who already inspire you! I love you guys, I’ll talk to you in a few days!
