Hi guys! Welcome to episode 180 of the Wildly Successful Lifestyle podcast! I hope you are all doing well!
My sister was visiting from Nashville which. I always love it. We decided to watch a movie one night, which is also fun. But there aren’t a lot of movies out that are good so we ended up watching one that was pretty disturbing. We knew going into it that it wasn’t going to be a feel good movie but we didn’t know it was going to be that bad. Because of the movie, we then started talking about some of our family issues, which made us both feel even worse.
Anyway, the next day, when I woke up, my brain wanted to rehash the terrible thoughts that the movie brought up,
I know better. I know that filling your head with something that makes you feel really bad and brings up all kinds of bad things is never a good idea, but I did it anyway and because I have been really working on being aware of every thought I have, I realized that a HUGE part of that is making sure what I allow in is supporting that.
And that’s a big struggle, especially right now because there are things going on that I would like to be different. There’s actually a lot of things right now that I wish were different. But I don’t control those things. I control my thoughts about what’s going on and I control the actions I take daily. So if I’m focusing on things I don’t control and they make me worried or scared but I can’t change it, what good does it do to focus on it? And some of you may be thinking, well isn’t that sticking your head in the sand? Guys, Tony Robbins always says ‘‘Energy flows where focus goes’’. Do you want your energy to be flowing toward the negative energy in the world or do you want it to flow towards the positive energy?
There’s a lot going on in the world, but there always has been, just now we are aware of it because of 24/7 news and social media.
It’s the norm to be aware of the latest Netflix shows, it’s the norm to know the latest TikTok dance, it’s the norm to know what the politicians are messing up now, it’s the norm to fill your head with what other people are doing, what other people are eating, what other people are wanting you to focus on. But is any of that making you better? If you’re always going with the norm, when do you find the time to be excellent? Is any of that adding value to your life? When you are constantly focused on someone else’s ideas and thoughts, it leaves no room for you to be creative, innovative and more importantly present in your own life.
So, what do YOU want to focus on? What will add value to YOUR life? What will INSPIRE YOU to be better?
The norm is by definition not going to inspire you. It’s a pattern that is typical. It’s a pattern that is considered acceptable. The norm is going to get you mediocrity which is the villain to being Wildly Successful.
You were born to be something special. But your job is to find what that is. You probably already know deep down the general idea of what that is but maybe because it’s not perfectly defined and laid out neatly for you, you think it’s just a dream. But that’s not how it works. See you have this idea and when you start really focusing on that idea and you start taking little steps towards that idea, that’s when you start getting momentum and momentum is what you need to get that idea to come into full fruition. Momentum is the key. You control that momentum by what you’re doing daily, what you’re watching, who you’re talking to, what you’re reading. Momentum headed in the right direction is unstoppable. You’ve seen the basketball team that gets momentum and they become unbeatable. That’s the power of momentum.
And there will be people that will try to stop you, for whatever reason. It could be they think they’re protecting you. When momentum is on your side, you aren’t easily swayed. It doesn’t matter what other people think or say when you’re certain of your mission.
We were in Monaco for the Grand Prix a few years ago and it was really really busy as you can imagine, I mean the Grand Prix was going on! Anyway, it was very hard to find transportation if you didn’t live there or have your car there, you’d have to wait a long time for a driver. So we were trying to scope out our seats for the race and one of our friends went up to a traffic guard and asked him if we were able to walk to where we needed to go. He rudely said “This is not possible.” So we didn’t know any better at the time and so we just waited for a driver and off we went. Well on the way home that night, we asked our driver the same question and he said YES, of course you can walk in fact from where you are staying it is a very short walk up those steps right there. We had been standing in front of those steps when we asked the other guy too. You see we don’t know why he said that…surely he knew but that is us making assumptions. You see, sometimes we let one person that says “it isn’t possible” deter us and we just take it as fact and that kills the idea right there. But that made our time in Monaco much much easier knowing we could use those stairs instead of having to wait for a driver because we quite possibly could have missed the race all together if we had relied on getting a driver or if we had not asked someone else about walking there. A good friend told me once ‘‘Don’t listen to the haters’’. I kind of love that, but I don’t think of them as haters. I just think they don’t know and it isn’t their job to find out, it’s mine. And I will. And I hope you will too.
Momentum is set the minute we wake up and make a decision of what we will focus on that day. You decide to focus your mind on the negative drama of the week, that’s where your head will be, that’s what it will want to get more of, because that’s where the momentum is. But if you change it immediately when you see it heading in a negative direction, it’s much easier than if you wait until you’ve spent 45 minutes or 2 hours reading all the latest news about COVID or mandates or whatever negative thing the media wants us to be fixated on. Abraham Hicks likes to give the example of a car that is at the top of a big hill in San Francisco, if the car starts rolling and you catch it at the top of the hill before it gets momentum it’s easy to nudge it back, to stop it but if you wait until its full blown heading down the hill to try to stop it, well lets just say it’s going to flatten you. Big momentum is hard to stop so make sure it’s the momentum that gets you what you want instead of what you don’t want.
So
After watching that disturbing movie, I felt weird the whole next day. I had to work extra hard to get my head on right, I let the momentum get way too far by dwelling on it and thinking of all these things it brought up for me. This was not a good thing. The good news is…we get to control the narrative in our head and no matter where we’ve been up till now, we can change it. You are not your thoughts, you are not your behavior, but everything you allow in affects those things.
My challenge to you today is just be aware of how the things you’re allowing to take space in your head are affecting the actions you take every day. Are they causing you to reminisce about the past, worry about the future, maybe they’re causing you to overeat because of stress or fight with your friends and family because you disagree? That seems to be the narrative right now. We are better than that and we know it. It’s time to put our foot down and say “enough”. I’ve had enough of someone else’s narrative dictating my thoughts. And that’s when the momentum will shift in your favor. I love you guys and I’ll talk to you in a few days!
